Errol Spence Jr will look to add another welterweight title to his collection when he goes up against Yordenis Ugas tonight.
Spence Jr, 32, defends the WBC and IBF belts at 147lbs while simultaneously challenging his Cuban opponent for the WBA Super title. It has been 16 months since Spence Jr competed, with the American having beaten compatriot Danny Garcia via decision in December 2020. That fight took place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, where this Saturday’s headline bout will also be staged. The 35-year-old Ugas (27-4, 12 KOs), meanwhile, last fought in August, outpointing icon Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas.
“Most Cuban fighters, you know they move a lot, they use angles, they stay on their feet and their toes. Ugas is not even that,” Spence told Fight Hub TV. “He’s a guy that tries to fight, wants to fight, wants to trade shots and things like that. I wouldn’t say he’s crazy tricky; I think people put too much emphasis on him being tricky… Y’all gotta tell me what he does that’s tricky.”

On Sunday, it all goes on the line in the welterweight division.
Errol Spence Jr. and Yordenis Ugas face off in a welterweight world title unification bout that puts the World Boxing Council, International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Association belts up for grabs.
Beyond the belts, this is a fight that could also clear the path for the megafight everyone has been waiting for. But any hope of a Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford blockbuster will depend on the former getting past Ugas on Sunday.

There is more on the line that a shot at Crawford too, with Spence Jr. gunning to prove his doubters wrong as he completes his remarkable comeback to the ring.
The 31-year-old was hospitalised for days and sidelined for months after a single car crash in October, 2019.
Spence came back in December, 2020 to take down Danny Garcia and was then set to fight Manny Pacquiao late last year but was forced to scrap those plans after undergoing surgery
to repair a detached retina suffered in training.
“When people say I can’t do this or I can’t do that, I prove them wrong every time,” he said.
“I am the same guy I was before the accident and the injury. I feel like I’m better than that guy that fought Shawn Porter or Danny García.”
Spence Jr. added that he does not think the fight will last 12 rounds, looking for the finish that will have him destined for a shot at Crawford and the chance to become undisputed welterweight champion.
ULTIMATE GUIDE: Everything to know ahead of Spence vs Ugas
As for Ugas, he enters Sunday’s fight with a record of 27-4 with 12 knockouts.
Having upset Pacquiao last August, the Cuban is now gunning to play spoiler once again and this time put the prospect of a Spence Jr.-Crawford fight to bed.
Former two division champion Timothy Bradley though described Spence as a “stylistic nightmare” in his preview of the fight with ESPN.
“In his fight against Pacquiao, Ugas was able to land the harder and more impactful punches, which is why he got the win,” Bradley said.
“If he plans on beating Spence, he will have to force Spence to make mistakes and get reckless. Unfortunately for Ugas, that is the exact opposite way Spence fights.
“Spence will be the bigger and faster fighter, and he will be a stylistic nightmare for Ugas. Look for Spence to control the distance and stay behind his jab, not allowing Ugas to counter anything. Unless Ugas lands something big, I see Spence working the body throughout the 12 rounds and getting the unanimous decision win.”

Three welterweight championships are on the line in Arlington, Texas, when Errol Spence Jr. clashes with Yordenis Ugas on Saturday night. Spence will be defending his WBC and IBF titles while Ugas will put his WBA title up for grabs.
Spence has laid claim to being one of the top fighters in all of boxing, only seen as truly rivaled in his division by WBO champion Terence Crawford. A win over Ugas could be the next step for Spence in finally getting to a dream bout with Crawford, which would then be a four-belt unification.
Ugas is no light touch, however, as the world was reminded in his last outing, when he defeated Manny Pacquiao on late notice, sending the legend into retirement. Ugas also arguably deserved the win over Shawn Porter in a bout for the WBC title in March 2019. Porter was awarded the fight by controversial split decision.
